Episode Guide
I have been asked by a couple of people for a "when did ____ happen" type of resource and have been diligently working on an in-depth episode guide in the style of Keith Topping. For those who don't know, he wrote a number of episode guides for different shows with fun descriptive categories like "Don't Be in the Teaser," for a couple of different shows in which something horrible always happens prior to the opening credits, for The X-Files, he had a "Scully's Rational Explanation of the Week" and as a counterpoint, "How Did He Do That," to detail Mulder's wild theories. For Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, he had one called "Valley Speak" to detail all the uses of SoCal slang and in his Angel book, a similar one called, "L.A. Speak." These are only a few examples. Since it's highly unlikely that there will ever be such a guide for our beloved SMK, I thought it was time someone created one. Below is an explanation of each of my own categories:
Take Cover: Disguises or covers used.
Spy Speak: Moments in which Lee has to explain the espionage game to Amanda or correct her erroneous perceptions of what spies do.
Weapons of Mass Distraction: Makeshift weapons that Amanda has used to confuse, distract or disable the enemy including her "champion confuser" moments.
Shouldn't I know How to Hit?: Those moments when Amanda's training or lack thereof is mentioned.
Stay in the Car: Those times when Lee tells Amanda to stay behind, but not always in the car.
Partners in Crime Fighting: Those times when Lee refuses to acknowledge Amanda as a partner in the early episodes and in later ones when he does.
We're Not Involved: Moments in which Lee and Amanda act couple-like, specifically stated they are not involved, or in later episodes, pretend not to be.
Black Book babes: Lee's dates/girlfriends or in a few cases Francine's, Dotty's, or Amanda's love interests.
Whopper of the Week: Amanda's stories to her mother about what she's been doing.
Denial, Thy Name is Dotty: Times when Dotty had the truth right in front of her and didn't see it or simply pretended not to.
Mother Knows Best: Words of wisdom provided by Dotty and other Dotty fun.
Boys Will Be Boys: Those moments with Phillip and Jamie being...well...boys.
New Normal: At the beginning of the series, we see how differently Lee and Amanda think regarding "normal life," however, as the show goes on, we see him slowly veer toward the more normal life and her slowly adapting to Agency life until their views seem to meld. This section will be to outline those moments that got them there.
Leaps of a Logical Mind: Those moments when Amanda's logic(and occasionally others) leads to a solution.
Rescue Me: Those times when one or more characters needs to be rescued.
Only the Good Die Young: SMK racked up quite the body count in its four-year run. This section is to detail those deaths.
Cracking the Case: How the case was wrapped up.
Bad to the Bone: Who the baddies are and what they're up to.
Francine Fun: Zingers, barbs and other fun stuff. Plus those occasional moments when we see the heart beneath the cool exterior.
Continuity: Moments that establish canon, or blatantly disregard it.
NOTE: Some episodes will appear out of airing order in this guide due to continuity. For example, The ACM Kid has to be canonically before "Magic Bus" since it is clearly Dotty's first day with Dr. Bain as evidenced by Amanda's surprise that her mother was out with him, yet her square dancing date with him is mentioned in "Magic Bus."
On an addition note, while most of the guide contains factual information from each episode there are many instances in which I've added my own commentary and/or speculation on the things that are happening.
