There Goes the Neighborhood
Airdate: 10/10/83
Summary: Amanda and Lee pose as a married couple to foil a weapon smuggling ring and solve the disappearance of an American housewife.
Take Cover: To get Amanda out of her interview at Honeycutt Typewriter, Lee pretends to be her husband and a chauvinistic one at that. To Amanda, "There you are, you sly boots. I thought we agreed, Babycakes, no job until the triplets are in nursery school." To Warren Davenport, the interviewer, "The little woman is so gosh darn eager to earn some pin money, but I told her, the first four years of a child's life are more imported than a new roof." To Amanda as he forces her out of her chair, "Come on Cookieface, it's two o'clock feeding time. Timmy, Tammy and Tommy are very hungry." It's not until they are outside that Amanda gets over her shock enough to speak and lets him have it. "What the Sam Hill do you think you are doing? First you cannot get rid of me fast enough. Then you drag me out of an interview for a perfectly good job. You say you are my husband, a lie which I DO NOT find funny...and where do you think you are taking me?" Lee: "We're getting married." "That's asking too much."
Lee and Amanda's cover names are Lee and Amanda Morton. Amanda takes a job as a Connie Beth girl to get to know the neighbors in the hopes of unraveling the mystery of Betty Bodeen's death. Lee and Amanda later pretend to be company spies for Connie Beth Cosmetics chief competitor, Lovely Lady.
Spy Speak: Amanda, on the closet elevator: "Don't you people use real doors? But what I really wanna' know is, where do you hang your coats?"
Amanda: "I can't sleep here. I would feel like I was lying and sneaking." Lee: "You are lying and sneaking. You're working for the government."
Weapons of Mass Distraction: Hairspray in Bobby Bouchard's eyes giving Lee and Amanda the distraction they need to escape. When complimented by Lee about it, Amanda replies, "Mace training."
Shouldn't I know How to Hit?: Amanda: "I only wish I had had time to get started on that trainee orientation program." Lee: "Amanda, you do not need training for this one. It is a simple case. I mean, nothing bad ever happens in the suburbs." Famous last words, Scarecrow.
Stay in the Car: When Amanda asks Lee if he needs her, he does everything to get rid of her short of shoving her out the door...that is, until Billy insists upon soliciting her help.
Partners in Crime Fighting: Lee: Amanda: "Oh, uh, well, I just wanted to bring in the personal profile the Agency asked me to fill out the last time we were on a case together." Lee: "Amanda, we were not on a "case." We were thrown together completely by accident. A one in-a-million kind of thing. A fluke."
We're Not Involved: Amanda: "You say you are my husband, a lie which I DO not find funny...and where do you think you are taking me?" Lee: "We're getting married." Amanda: "That's asking too much." There are also some delightful moments when they argue over spending the night at the house together. Lee asks Amanda for a drink in the tag, but she turns him down.
Black Book Babes: This time, none of Lee's "girls" are mentioned, however, there is an argument regarding Dean when Lee informs Amanda that they have to spend the night. Lee: "Do you like a window open at night?" Amanda: "I have to consider Dean." Lee: "Okay, how does he feel about windows?"
Francine on congressman "Bumpy" Holcomb. "He's got money, looks, power, a house in Rio...he is exactly my type."
Whopper of the Week: The "club" appears again, this time with Amanda telling her mother that the reason she's leaving the house with an armload of clothing is working the club's rummage sale.
Denial, Thy Name is Dotty: Dotty: "Why didn't you tell me you were having a rummage sale? I would love to contribute something."
Mother Knows Best: Dotty: (examining the pile of clothing Amanda is carrying) "Are you getting rid of this blouse?" (Amanda nods) "Good. I don't think I ever told you the strange things it did to you."
Dotty: "What do you mean you didn't get the job at Honeycutt Typewriter? Didn't the interview go well?" Amanda: "You certainly could say that." Dotty: "Have you told Dean? I think you should. I have always found him a rock in my darkest moments." Amanda: "You told my boyfriend your darkest moments?" Dotty: "Well, um...he's so patient. It's like talking to a registered nurse."
Boys Will Be Boys: Amanda: "Jamie, we have to work on your spelling tonight." Jamie: "But I've got soccer practice, then play rehearsal. Then I've got to make a map of Virginia out of dough." Amanda: "Okay, well, we'll do it after you do all that." Phillip: "You said we could spend the night at Kenneth's house." Amanda: "I did?" Boys: "Mm-hmm."
New Normal: Lee's apparent abhorrence of being friendly to people and being normal is revisited. Amanda: "You know, that's your whole problem. You're out of touch." Lee: "Out of touch with what? Amanda: The way normal people do things." Lee: "I'm normal. Amanda: "Oh, sure. You think sunbathing in Borneo's normal. You know, most people just want to get through a day with healthy kids, friends they can count on, a regular job, and a roof over their heads." Lee: "Fine. That's normal, I'm not."
Leaps of a Logical Mind: Amanda figures out that Betty Bodeen's death was a direct result of her burned-up hairdryer.
Rescue Me: Amanda is nabbed by Bobby Bouchard's men under the guise of initiation to Connie Beth's Golden Circle. Amanda: "What are you doing here?" Lee: "Rescuing...you."
Only the Good Die Young: Betty Bodeen, at first thought to be missing, is actually dead. We see her body being dumped by Bouchard's henchmen. Her husband Frank is also killed later in the episode. Off-screen, a gunrunner named LeMarq is killed just prior to the beginning of the episode.
Bad to the Bone: Bobby Bouchard, left the company by his deceased mother, takes exporting his products to a whole new level when he hides dismantled weapons inside beauty appliances. He appears to have severe mommy issues.
Cracking the Case: After Lee takes Amanda's deduction seriously, he swipes one of the packages from the Connie Beth office and determines that the weapons they are looking for are being smuggled out of the country unknowingly by housewives across the nation working as Connie Beth's elite "Golden Circle Girls."
Francine Fun: Arriving in the suburbs: "Children. This case is nastier than I thought."
To Frank Bodeen, "Do I look like I sell?"
While going through the Connie Beth packages. Billy: "Does any of this look strange to you?" Francine: "All of it. I never use domestic creams."
There is also a bit of fun when Francine teases Lee about his "marriage" to Amanda. Francine: "How is married life treating you? Dinner at six? Dishes at seven? TV until nine?" Lee: "Bed." Francine: (startled) "Bed?" Lee: "Bed, Francine... I have a great deal of respect for the generosity and...stamina...of the American housewife." Francine: "You're disgusting."
Upon discovering the housewives are unknowingly smuggling weapons, "What generosity and stamina."
Continuity: Amanda and Dean once took a fishing vacation in Arkansas, establishing that Amanda is a bit outdoorsy, likes to fish and that the relationship with Dean is at least serious enough for her to have taken a vacation with him...or at least it was that serious at some point.
The continuity of Francine having a privileged attitude is continued.
It is also established that Amanda has already taken or is taking some form of self-defense class since she mentions mace training. See "If Thoughts Could Kill."
This is the first of many times that Amanda mentions wanting/needing more training. Amanda: "I only wish I had had time to get started on that trainee orientation program." Lee: "Amanda, you do not need training for this one. It is a simple case. I mean, nothing bad ever happens in the suburbs."
When Amanda complains about having to make an appointment to see her own children, Dotty replies, "I know. It's terrifying how fast they drift away. I mean, one minute you're changing their diapers, and the next minute, they're off in Honduras, getting tattoos." Sadly, this is never explained.
